History

The establishment of the Architecture Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Mataram, represents a long and rigorous process characterized by sustained commitment, institutional collaboration, and strategic perseverance over an extended period.

The initial initiative emerged during the tenure of the third Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the late Prof. Ir. Hadi Sutrisno (2001–2009). During this period, Rini S. Saptaningtyas, ST., M.Sc., a lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering with an academic background in Architecture, initiated the proposal to establish an Architecture Study Program at Universitas Mataram. As a preliminary step, consultations were conducted with the Indonesian Institute of Architects – West Nusa Tenggara Chapter (IAI NTB), then chaired by the late Ir. Soemarprayono.

The proposal subsequently received strong endorsement from the Indonesian Institute of Architects at the national level (IAI National), under the leadership of its Chairman, Dr. Ir. Budi Sukada. Further institutional engagement was undertaken through formal meetings involving Rini S. Saptaningtyas, ST., M.Sc., Zaedar Gazalba, ST., MT, and Teti Handayani, ST., MA, alongside representatives of IAI National and IAI NTB, with the Rector of Universitas Mataram, Prof. Ir. H. Mansur Ma’shum, Ph.D. The initiative was positively received and formally supported at the university level.

Following this endorsement, the Rector delegated the responsibility for the preparatory phase to the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs (formerly Assistant Rector I), the late Dr. Ir. Parman. However, at that time, institutional alignment had not yet been fully achieved, as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering expressed a preference for establishing a Product Design Study Program instead. As a result, it was agreed that the proposed Architecture Study Program would be temporarily placed under the direct coordination of the Rector. The process was subsequently interrupted due to the passing of the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, who had been a key proponent of the initiative.

The proposal was revisited during the tenure of the fourth Dean, Pathurrahman, ST., MT (2009–2013), but could not be advanced due to limitations in classroom infrastructure. Similar constraints persisted during the leadership of the fifth Dean, Yusron Saadi, ST., MSc., Ph.D. (2013–2017). Although institutional support at the faculty level was present, the proposal was not approved at the university level due to a national moratorium policy issued by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, restricting the establishment of new study programs.

A significant breakthrough was achieved during the tenure of the sixth Dean, Akmaluddin, ST., M.Sc(Eng)., Ph.D. (2017–2021). In February 2018, the proposal was formally reinitiated and received full support from both the Dean and the Rector, Prof. Dr. H. Lalu Husni, SH., MH. The Rector subsequently instructed the immediate preparation and submission of the official proposal documents.

A dedicated academic team was established to develop the proposal, consisting of Rini S. Saptaningtyas, ST., M.Sc., Zaedar Gazalba, ST., MT, and Teti Handayani, ST., MA, all of whom possess academic backgrounds in Architecture. Despite encountering various administrative and regulatory challenges during the submission process to the Ministry, the proposal was ultimately approved. This approval was formalized through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 45/M/2020, dated January 10, 2020, granting official permission for the establishment of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Architecture at Universitas Mataram.

The Architecture Study Program officially commenced its academic operations in the Odd Semester of the 2020/2021 Academic Year and began admitting students through the national selection systems (SNMPTN and SBMPTN) as well as the independent admission pathway.

In recognition of its academic quality and institutional performance, the Architecture Study Program was awarded accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) on February 14, 2023, with a classification of “Good.”
